Why should you sponsor a student?

Sponsoring a student means you are joining a child on a journey as they learn, grow, and chase their dreams. You will inspire them—and they will leave you inspired! As a sponsor, you'll receive a bi-monthly school newsletter alongside a letter from your student where you'll learn about their family, community, interests, and dreams.

What your sponsorship provides:

A world-class education in an area where most children are prone to dropping out before graduation.

School supplies, nutritious school meals, uniforms, and the resources they need to succeed academically.

A curriculum that fosters confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills both inside and outside the classroom.

Community-wide impact by empowering students to engage in community service and enhancement projects.

THE REASON

Lack of education prevents the economic and social development of some of the most disenfranchised parts of our world. Ensuring access to quality education is how we started with the opening of the Young Living Academy in Ecuador in 2009. Since then, we’ve continued to equip children and youth with the resources to build a better future through education, because education can lead to higher income, improved health, gender equality, and can prevent poverty from continuing on to the next generation.

Around the world, 773 million adults—two-thirds of whom are women—are illiterate, and 617 million youth worldwide lack basic mathematics and literacy skills. Financial limitations represent the main barrier to attending school, in which case some families must make the difficult decision to pay to send one child to school or to provide even the most basic necessities for their family, inhibiting children from progressing out of the circumstances they were born into.

THE REGION

Chongón, Ecuador is a small but growing community approximately 40 minutes outside of Guayaquil, Ecuador's second largest city. In this community, most families make ends meet through unskilled work, and many adults are under-educated. Here, only approximately 20 percent of children graduate high school, making it difficult for them to break out of the cycles of poverty they were born into.

As Young Living Founder D. Gary Young was exploring land for the Finca Botanica farm in Chongón in the 2000's, he recognized that investing in education could transform this community's prospects. Each day, he passed a small brick building on his way to the farm, and realized the single-room building was a school. Inside, 42 children in kindergarten through sixth grade were sitting at broken desks receiving lessons from a volunteer teacher on an old chalkboard. Recognizing the potential within each of these students, he set out to build a school that would provide a world-class education to these children, so they could actualize their talents.

THE REACH

Since the Young Living Academy opened its doors to 67 students in 2009, we've grown to accommodate 350 students in pre-K through twelfth grade. Over the years, we've celebrated:

  • 112 total students graduated
  • 94 of whom are currently studying at university
  • 12 students who hold current college degrees
  • 32 students awarded scholarships from the D. Gary Young, Young

And the best part is that its impact is entirely fueled…. BY YOU!! Our Young Living brand partners who step in to sponsor students at the Academy. Our sponsors’ support of their student makes a lifelong impact on that child and their community, instilling in them a lifelong practice of looking out for the welfare of those around them.

Sponsors make a meaningful and lasting impact!

Since 2009, we’ve seen how access to a quality education at the Young Living Academy has changed our students lives and their community’s prospects. In an area where only approximately 20 percent of students graduate high school, our sponsors are making it possible for children to actualize their talents and achieve their dreams!

”Now, my future is full of opportunity.”

—Kelly Pesantes, Young Living Academy graduate
